Waiting on Wednesday #80

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

In the Shadow of Blackbirds by Cat Winters
Publisher: Amulet Books
Expected Publication: April 2nd, 2013
Pages: 304
Goodreads Summary:
In 1918, the world seems on the verge of apocalypse. Americans roam the streets in gauze masks to ward off the deadly Spanish influenza, and the government ships young men to the front lines of a brutal war, creating an atmosphere of fear and confusion. Sixteen-year-old Mary Shelley Black watches as desperate mourners flock to séances and spirit photographers for comfort, but she herself has never believed in ghosts. During her bleakest moment, however, she’s forced to rethink her entire way of looking at life and death, for her first love—a boy who died in battle—returns in spirit form. But what does he want from her?

Featuring haunting archival early-twentieth-century photographs, this is a tense, romantic story set in a past that is eerily like our own time.

Oh wow, please take a look at this super creepy cover! The summary sounds like the novel could reflect this mood and I'm desperately hoping it will - because that seems so very promising. Too bad it's still so long until its release date.

Which book are you waiting for this Wednesday?

  1. GOSH I can't look at the cover for too long, or it gives me the heebie jeebies! This one sounds really scary--I like how the premise says it's 1918 and the world feels like the apocalypse is coming. That's interesting to me, how it's historical fiction and they already think that. Ghosts?! AH. I can't wait to see the images. Great pick this week, Carina!

  3. This one is new to me and it sounds amazing! I love early photography, as well as novels set in the late 19th or early 20th century, and the whole war, disease and séance element intrigues me. Thanks so much for pointing this one out to me, it must go on my TBR :)

  5. Sounds very cool. I wonder if the Mary Shelley Black character is meant to be an homage to the author of "Frankenstein?" (I'm presuming it is) And if so, I wonder if the Frankenstein story is hinted at in the story? Definitely one for the list. Thanks for stopping by!
