Review + Giveaway: Here by Denise Grover Swank (Blog Tour Stop)

Here by Denise Grover Swank
Series: On the Otherside #1
Publisher: Self-Published
First published: November 7th, 2011
Source: Received from author
Format: eBook
Pages: 350
Goodreads Summary:
Sixteen year old Julia Phillips buries herself in guilt after killing her best friend Monica in a car accident. Julia awoke in the hospital with a broken leg, a new talent for drawing and false memories of the accident, in which she dies and Monica lives. The doctors attribute this to her head injury, but no one can explain how a bracelet engraved with her name ended up at the scene of the accident. A bracelet no one has ever seen before.

Classmate Evan Whittaker paid Julia no attention before the accident, let alone after. Now suddenly he’s volunteering to tutor her and offering to drive her home. She can't ignore that his new obsession started after his two-day disappearance last week and that he wears a pendant she’s been drawing for months. When the police show up one night looking for Evan, he begs Julia to run with him, convincing her that Monica is still alive. Julia agrees to go, never guessing where he’s really from.

My Rating: 4.5 / 5

First thoughts:
As a very surprising and addicting novel, I can recommend Here to everyone who is looking for something unique that will leave him speechless - especially during the middle part of the story. Even though it was really good right from the beginning, its huge twist managed to captivate me and leaves me wanting more.

More detailed:
I first added this book to my to-read list after seeing it on another blog, drawn in not only by the mysterious cover but also by the very intriguing synopsis. So of course I jumped at the chance to review Here for its blog tour, definitely expecting to like it. But I was still suprised by how much I turned out to enjoy it and how it was impossible to put down.

Here turned out to be so much more than what the summary wants you to believe. I won't go into detail about the setting and the surprises I've encountered while reading it, because not knowing it made it even more interesting. Just know that Denise Grover Swank has created a story and a world that will make you crave more and more answers without leaving you confused at the same time.

Julia is a quite fascinating main character who has been through a very hard time. After her best friend's death, which she continues to blame herself for, it's difficult for her to move on and find happiness. Her conflicting emotions are portayed very vividly and make it easy to understand her even though I sometimes wanted to push her into the right direction. But overall, her development is wonderful to witness and I loved seeing how she could slowly leave more and more of her grief behind.

The romance in Here is sweet and lovely to read about - it's what gives Julia new strength to finally live her life again. In the beginning it reminds me a lot of the love story in Evermore by Alyson Noel and fans of this series will especially enjoy the first half of Here. There is a love triangle, but I think even people who usually don't like these might be able to appreciate it. And as someone who loves love triangles myself, I cannot wait to see how these relationships will turn out in the second book of this series.

All in all, Here is a addictive story that had me turning its pages as fast as possible in hopes of finding out more about these intriguing characters and their world. Fans of Alyson Noel's Immortal series and the tv-show Fringe will devour this one and wait for its sequel as impatiently as I am.
