Review: Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare

Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare
Series: The Infernal Devices #2
Publisher: Walker Books
First published: December 6th, 2011
Source: Bought
Format: Paperback
Pages: 496
Goodreads Summary:
The situation at the London Institute has never been more precarious. With Mortmain and his clockwork army still threatening, the Council wants to strip Charlotte of her power and hand the running of the Enclave over to the unscrupulous and power-hungry Benedict Lightwood.

In the hope of saving Charlotte and the Institute, Will, Jem, and Tessa set out to unravel the secrets of Mortmain’s past—and discover unsettling Shadowhunter connections that hold the key not only to the enemy’s motivations, but also to the secret of Tessa’s identity. Tessa, already caught between the affections of Will and Jem, finds herself with another choice to make when she learns how the Shadowhunters helped make her a “monster.” Will she turn from them to her brother, Nate, who has been begging her to join him at Mortmain’s side? Where will her loyalties—and love—lie? Tessa alone can choose to save the Shadowhunters of London…or end them forever.

My Rating: 5.0 / 5

First thoughts:
I was sucked into the world of Shadowhunters within a few moments again and never wanted this book to end. Tessa's story is both, beautiful and heart-breaking and I need the third book immediately. While I remember not being too fond of the first book, I fell in love with this series while reading Clockwork Prince and need to re-read the first book soon to really appreciate it.

More detailed:
What I completely admire about the The Infernal Devices series is the love triangle. Cassandra Clare managed to write a love triangle in which my heart is breaking for both boys, Will and Jem. While I believe that Tessa has to be with Will, I love Jem as well and can't stand the thought of his heart being broken and, most importantly, Will and Jem's friendship to be possibly strained by this.

Both, Will and Jem are amazing characters with a lot of different character traits that make their personalities unique. Where Jem is quiet and kind, Will can be harsh and impulsive, but exactly this makes their friendship special. It creates a wonderful balance and makes them bring out the best in each other. This in return, makes it difficult for Tessa to choose one of them - something that almost every (female) reader should be able to understand.

Tessa is a really intriguing character as well. Her identity is still a big mystery and is another reason why I want to read the third novel, Clockwork Princess, immediately. Like her, I'm dying to find out more about her and can't wait for all secrets to be revealed. I also really like her as a main character. Most of the story is told from her point of view, which is done well - I could connect with her easily.

I loved seeing the other characters of this world again, too. Of course I was really enjoying the scenes with Magnus Bane, whom I already loved in the The Mortal Instruments series and who is a fantastic character. But the other characters had a few surprises in store as well, making me either wanting to curse or to hug them. Sometimes both.

All in all, Clockwork Prince is a great sequel with lots of action, great character development and an emotional rollercoaster. You will be happy, you will be sad, laugh and cry, but you have to read it. This is a great series and this second book made me fall in love with it. Cassandra Clare therefore managed to create not one, but two unique series that should be on everyone's to-read lists.

Books in this series:

1. Clockwork Angel (my review)
2. Clockwork Prince
3. Clockwork Princess (Dec 2013)

Have you read Clockwork Prince? What did you think?
Do you plan to read it?

  1. Great review! I love this series and I'm dying to read Clockwork Prince, it's on my bedside table right now actually. Unfortunately for me though I'm in the middle of finals and don't have time to read it. I'm definitely reading it as soon as finals are over though :)

  3. I'm a big steampunk fan, so Clockwork angel is on my list of books to read. But I am getting a little tired of love triangles in YA books.

  6. Aw, I love Magnus Bane as well! Scenes with him are always favorites. And I agree about Clare's love triangles. I'm so scared to finish this one! And no, I actually haven't yet. o: It's been forever since I first picked it up but I... erhm... had review books? Lol. I AM going to read it. But everyone says it's SO heartbreaking and it's the first time I'll have to wait for her next book. Tortureeee o.o Great, great review though!!

  7. I without a doubt love this series! I completely forgot about reality and fell completely into the characters' world! I cannot wait for the third book! I am a complete hopeless romantic and the love triangle is killing me! I love Jem, but her soulmate is Will. I just hope in Clockwork Princess, Clare can make it so she can be with Will and Jem is not completely heart broken! This truly is a great series!
