Destined by Jessie Harrell
Publisher: Mae Day Publishing
Expected Publication: November 17th, 2011
Source: Received from author
When Psyche receives a prophecy gone horribly wrong, she learns that even the most beautiful girl in Greece can have a hideous future. Her fate? Fall in love with the one creature even the gods fear.
As she feels herself slipping closer into the arms of the prophecy, Psyche must choose between the terrifyingly tender touch she feels almost powerless to resist and the one constant she's come to expect out of life: you cannot escape what is destined.
Destined is a fresh and heartachingly romantic retelling of the Cupid & Psyche myth from debut novelist, Jessie Harrell.
My Rating: 5.0 / 5
This is a very seductive and beautiful story which I can recommend to everyone who is looking for a romantic and well written novel. Destined is now definitely one of my favorite books of 2011 because it has everything I want in a story: interesting characters, an exciting storyline and a lovely style of writing.
Once I was finished with Destined, I wanted to go back and read it again immediately. It is one of those rare books which leave you with a feeling of utter contentment. If you like Greek mythology and wonderfully written YA romances, you need to pick this up immediately.
I had high expectations for this as I love retellings of myths and had heard really positive things about this. As always, I was a little bit scared to pick up a book that is surrounded by a lot of hype, but Destined did not disappoint me. It was everything I hoped it would be, and more.
It is very easy to get into the story even without knowing the Cupid & Psyche myth. I had only looked it up briefly before starting Destined and I'm sure that this isn't even necessary. Jessie Harrell builds up the world of a mythical Greece beautifully and makes me want to be a part of it. Her descriptions of the places we visit are detailed enough to be able to imagine everything perfectly, but don't overwhelm a reader by conveying too much information.
Psyche and Eros are interesting characters that I loved to get to know better. Even though their world is completely different to ours, it's easy to relate to them and their feelings. While reading Destined I was constantly hoping for them to find their way to their happy ending. But the other characters we meet are lovely, too (especially Alexa), and we get to read about many different gods who are wonderfully characterized.
All in all, Destined is a wonderful story of love and seduction and making your own decisions in the face of destiny. Psyche and Eros' story is very memorable and will stay with me for a long time. I'm sure many of you will enjoy this as much as I did and therefore I really hope that you're going to give this novel a chance.
