Author Interview (+ Giveaway): Josephine Angelini

Today I'm welcoming Josephine Angelini, author of the fantastic novel Starcrossed (read my review here), for a small interview. Thank you so much for taking your time to answer my questions!

1. Let’s start with a small question: If you could be one of your own characters for one day, who would you like to be – and why?
Hector. First of all, he can breathe underwater and I’d love to be able to scuba dive without a tank. Second, I love his swagger. Even though he is kind of a jerk, wouldn’t it be fun to be a total, unapologetic jerk for a day?

2. Starcrossed got some very pretty covers and it’s almost impossible to decide which one to like best – which one is your favorite edition?
That’s like asking a mom which of her kids she thinks is the prettiest. I love them all and could never pick a favorite.

3. At the moment people love to read stories based on Greek mythology. But what fascinates you so much about it that you decided to base your novel on it?
I studied classical theatre at NYU-- I actually got a BFA in it, crazy as that may sound. I’ve always loved the Greek myths, but I also love the old Greek plays. For me, it was just a “write what you know” scenario.

4. Who are your favorite authors and books and did any of them inspire you to become an author?
I can’t really say I have a favorite author, but I grew up reading Douglas Adams, Anne McCafferey, Marion Zimmer Bradley, Jane Austin, the Bronte sisters, Mary Shelley (I love Frankenstein), Terry Pratchett, and J.R.R. Tolkien to name a few. As you can probably see, I read a lot as a kid, and most of it was fantasy.
The funny thing is, reading all of these fabulous books did more to convince me that I would never be good enough to be a writer than they did to inspire me. I should reword that—all of these writers inspired me to think and to use my imagination, but after reading their books I would always walk away convinced that there was no way I’d ever come up with anything that amazing. It took me years to have the confidence to try to write for a living.

5. To finish this: Is there anything you can tell us already about the sequel Dreamless? Just a small detail that will make the wait a little bit more bearable?
I’m very excited for everyone to read DREAMLESS! It’s darker than STARCROSSED, and it has a lot more action. And (dare I say it?) it’s sexier! Part of the story takes place in the Underworld so there is a grittier, more dangerous feel to this book. I also introduce a new and very important character named Orion, who is responsible for a lot of the aforementioned sexiness. I’m so pleased with how this book turned out and I’m dying for next spring to come so it can get out into the world!

  7. I found both trailers very well done, and I loved the title song for the 3rd trailer. That girl group rocked, I wish I played drums that well at this young lady's age. LOL
